1:1
Paul, an apostle: Apostles were representatives with authority given by a church or council (for example, 2 Corinthians 8:23; Philippians 2:25). However, the Jerusalem church did not appoint Paul as an apostle. Instead, Jesus Christ himself chose Paul, giving him Christ’s authority (Acts 9:1–15; 26:12–20; see also Romans 1:5). This authority was equal to that of other apostles.
Paul said that God the Father gave him his authority as an apostle. This happened because God raised Jesus from the dead. The fact that Jesus rose from death made it possible for Paul to receive his special work from God.
