Privacy notice

This explains what the Clearspring app keeps about you, why, how long for, and what you can do about it. We've tried to write it plainly. If anything isn't clear, ask us.

Who we are

The app is run by Clearspring Church, Cheltenham, a registered charity (CIO no. 1201405). We are the "data controller" for what you share in it.

Using the app without an account

You can read the Bible, watch talks and use almost everything without signing in. Your notes, highlights, reading plans and settings are then kept only on your own phone or computer, not by us.

What we keep, and why

Your account
Your email, the name you give (optional) and your password, stored scrambled so nobody can read it. We use these to let you sign in and, if you ask, to email you a sign-in link.
Things you choose to save
If you're signed in, your notes, highlights, journal, reading plans, memory verses and settings are copied to our server so they appear on all your devices. Only you can see them.
Prayer requests
What you write, and your name only if you tick to show it. You choose who sees a request: everyone on the prayer wall, just the prayer team, or just the pastors. Because a prayer request can say something about your faith or your health, the law treats it as especially sensitive. We only keep it because you've chosen to send it, and we use it only to pray for you. Requests on the wall are screened, and some are held for a person to check before they appear.
Questions and stories
What you send, and your name if you give it. If a question is answered on the Q&A page, your name is shown with it only if you gave one. Stories only appear after a pastor has read them.
Groups
Your name, the groups you join, and what you post. Group posts are seen only by the group's members. Church staff can't read them unless a post is reported to them. If you choose, the group can see how far you've got in a shared reading plan.
Notifications
If you turn them on, your phone gives us an address we can send notifications to, and we keep the topics you've picked. Turn them off and we stop.

How long we keep it

Who else is involved

We never sell your information or use it for advertising. A few services help run the app:

Children and young people

You need to be 13 or older to create an account. Younger children are welcome to use the app without one, with a parent or carer. Groups for under-18s are run by leaders in line with the church's safeguarding policy.

Your rights

You can ask to see what we hold about you, have it corrected, have it deleted, or download a copy. Most of this you can do yourself from your account. For anything else, contact us. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Cookies

The app uses a few small files on your device to keep you signed in, remember your settings and your place in the Bible, and protect forms from misuse. There are no advertising or tracking cookies.
