Prayer when you don't know how

Starting simply, and keeping going.

Most people feel awkward praying, and most people assume everyone else finds it easy. They don't.

Prayer is talking to God. It doesn't need special vocabulary, a particular posture, or a good mood. Jesus warned specifically against long, showy prayers — he suggested honesty and brevity instead.

If you want somewhere to start, a very old pattern still works:

**Thank** — name one thing you're grateful for. **Sorry** — name one thing you got wrong. **Please** — name one thing you or someone else needs.

That's a minute. Do that most days for a month and it stops feeling strange.

When words fail entirely — grief, exhaustion, anger — the Psalms are there precisely for that. They're far blunter with God than most of us dare to be.

There's a private prayer journal in the Prayer section of this app, kept only on your own phone, if writing helps you.
