On Psalms 25:1–22

This personal lament includes wisdom teachings and a community lament. It starts and ends with a declaration of trust in the Lord (Psalm 25:1–3, 15–22). The psalmist prays for guidance (Psalm 25:4–7) and urges the godly to live wisely (25:12–14).

In addition to the enemies who trouble him, the psalmist confesses his sins(Psalm 25:7, 11, 18) as part of his distress. Trust grows by understanding God's nature: He is compassionate, faithful, and good (Psalm 25:8–10).

On Psalms 25:12–15

Those who fear the Lord will receive further instruction and experience God’s presence (Psalm 25:14) and blessing (25:13).

The early church

"The Lord is the stay of them that fear Him" [Psalm 25:14]. Fear seems to belong to the weak, but the Lord is the stay of them that fear Him. And the Name of the Lord, which has been glorified throughout the whole world, is a stay to them that fear Him. "And His testament, that it may be manifested unto them." And He makes His testament to be manifested unto them, for the Gentiles and the bounds of the earth are Christ's inheritance.

Commentary

Henry (concise) · Verses 8–14

We are all sinners; and Christ came into the world to save sinners, to teach sinners, to call sinners to repentance. We value a promise by the character of him that makes it; we therefore depend upon God's promises. All the paths of the Lord, that is, all his promises and all his providences, are mercy and truth. In all God's dealings his people may see his mercy displayed, and his word fulfilled, whatever afflictions they are now exercised with. All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth; and so it will appear when they come to their journey's end. Those that are humble, that distrust themselves, and desire to be taught and to follow Divine guidance, these he will guide in judgment, that is, by the rule of the written word, to find rest for their souls in the Saviour. Even when the body is sick, and in pain, the soul may be at ease in God.
