Big questions

Can I trust the Bible?

We have far more early manuscripts of the New Testament than of any other ancient book: thousands of copies, some within a few generations of the originals. Scholars can reconstruct the original text with great confidence; the variations are mostly spelling and word order, and none changes a core belief.

The Gospels were written within living memory of Jesus, and they contain the kind of details eyewitnesses remember: names, places and embarrassing moments that inventors would have left out. Archaeology has repeatedly confirmed places and people they mention.

In the end, Christians trust the Bible because Jesus did. He treated the Scriptures as God’s word, and he promised his apostles the Spirit would guide them.

From the Bible

Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness,

2 Timothy 3:16

1Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us, 2even as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word delivered them to us, 3it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus; 4that you might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed.

Luke 1:1–4
